Bourg [bur] is a commune in the South-West of France, in the département of Gironde, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The official name of the commune is indeed Bourg, but it is often called Bourg-sur-Gironde (although it is situated on the Dordogne, it is close to the confluence corresponding to the beginning of the Gironde).
A little history
Bourg was created in the 4th century by the Paulin family. First a very important commercial centre, it subsequently became a fortified town. At the beginning of the 5th century, the Visigoths invaded Aquitaine and established themselves very firmly in Bourg. It was the era of the great invasions, and over the course of the following four centuries this region was successively ravaged by the Merovingians, the Gascons, the Saracens, the Carolingians and the Normans.
