Bléré, the town

Bléré (pronounced [bleʁe]) is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The town borders the banks of the Cher and lies within the arrondissement of Loches. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Cher and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The first written mention of Bléré is known to us through Grégoire de Tours, Bishop of Tours at the end of the 6th century, under the name Briotreide, a compound of Gaulish origin denoting the village at the foot of the bridge. This name, once Latinised, evolved and eventually gave rise to Blere as early as the 13th century. The presence of a bridge indicates that Bléré stood on a road of primary importance. It was in fact a road initially linking Amboise to Loches, two of the Gaulish capitals of the Turones, and subsequently Poitiers to Amboise, and finally the great royal road from Paris to Spain.
