Blaye, the town
Blaye covers 6.4 km², lies between 0 and 41 m above sea level and had 5,066 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Blaye (pronounced [blaj]) is a commune in the south-west of France, situated in the département of the Gironde in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Blayais. For centuries, Blaye was a particularly convenient crossing point for those coming from the north and travelling to Bordeaux or further south, towards Spain and Portugal.
A little history
César, in his Commentaires sur la Guerre des Gaules, mentions a Gaulish oppidum belonging to the city of the Santons, which he calls Blavia Santorum. It seems very probable that this refers to the present-day town of Blaye, situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gironde. From the 1st century AD, the Romans settled on this site and made it a fortified stronghold. Blaye is mentioned as Blavia on the table de Peutinger, on a Roman road between Burdigala (Bordeaux) and Mediolanum Santonum (Saintes).
