A little history
According to excavations on the banks of the Saône, the site of Belleville has been inhabited since prehistory. The commune of Belleville-en-Beaujolais stands on the site of a former Roman commune, Luuna. To the north, at the mouth of the Ardière, there was a Celtic village named Aiguerande, a Latinised version of Equerande, which gave its name to a district of the town as well as to the lycée. The territory thus formed part of that of the Eduens people.
