A little history
Beauvoir-sur-Mer bore the name of Ampennum during the Gallo-Roman period, and archaeological excavations have on several occasions uncovered evidence of occupation from this Gallo-Roman era. In 677 the bishop of Poitiers gave the villa of Ampan (Ampennum) to the monastery founded by saint Philibert at Herio, endowing it with a continental port and new salt marshes. In the 8th century it suffered Viking raids which destroyed its church. This was the first stage in the translation of the relics of saint Philibert towards Deas and then Tournus, in order to shelter the monastic community and the holy relics.
