Beaujeu is the historic capital of the Beaujolais. The region surrounding Beaujeu, corresponding approximately to the former arrondissement of Villefranche-sur-Saône (before 2015), has retained the name Beaujolais, today known worldwide for its vineyard. In the Middle Ages, the town was the centre of the seigneurie de Beaujeu, whose leaders, the "sires de Beaujeu", played an important role in the history of the Lyon region, and sometimes even in the history of France, notably, at the end of the 15th century, Pierre II de Bourbon and his wife Anne de France, often called Anne de Beaujeu.
