Bayonne, Baiona in Basque and in Gascon, is a French commune and one of the two sub-prefectures of the département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In 1023, Bayonne was the capital of the Labourd, and expanded during the 12th century towards and beyond the Nive, at the time when the first bridge over the Adour was built. Following the marriage in 1152 of Aliénor d'Aquitaine to Henri Plantagenêt, comte d'Anjou et du Maine, duc de Normandie and future king of England, the town took on a military and above all commercial importance, thanks to maritime trade with England.
