Bassens (pronounced [basɛ̃s]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of the Gironde in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is home to one of the components of the port of Bordeaux, the terminal de Bassens.
A little history
The first settlements, prehistoric and Gallo-Roman, are concentrated around the church and along the Garonne. The ancient Roman road towards Blaye, the chemin de la Vie, crossed the marshes, according to the scholar F. Jouannet. Léo Drouyn produced cross-sections and plans of it.
