Ballan-Miré (pronounced [balɑ̃miʁe]) is a French commune in the Centre-Val de Loire region, situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire, to the south-west of Tours. With an area of 26.16 km2, the commune is part of the Métropole de Tours, in the canton of Ballan-Miré. In 2009, it had 8,152 inhabitants, spread between the town and all of its hamlets.
A little history
It is perhaps at the location of the lieu-dit des Landes de Charlemagne, in the commune of Ballan-Miré, that Charles Martel defeated the Umayyad forces on 25 October 732, according to historians André-Roger Voisin and Pierre Leveel. It was at Ballan that Henri II, defeated and humiliated, went to meet Philippe Auguste and Richard Cœur de Lion, and yielded on every point, designating Richard in particular as his sole heir.
