Baccarat, the town
Baccarat covers 13.5 km², lies between 257 and 365 m above sea level and had 4,089 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Baccarat is a town in the North-East of France, in the South of the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle. In medieval Latin, the place name is Baccaratum, whereas in the Lorraine patois of the 19th century, the town was pronounced Bocorrot, with certain stressed vowels "a" producing a restricted "o" sound.
A little history
Baccarat was first a suburb of the town of Deneuvre, which has Roman origins. The name Baccarat perhaps derives from Bacchi-ara (altar of Bacchus), the name of the Roman castellum of which a remnant can be seen, known as the tour du Bacha, on the heights of Deneuvre. Baccarat, which had its own particular customs, was the chief town of a châtellenie of the episcopal principality of Metz (bailliage de Vic). In 1305, Henri, first sire de Blâmont of the family de Salm, was the advocate of Deneuvre for the bishop of Metz, and to ensure its security he had the tour des Voués built at the foot of the spur.
