Azay-le-Rideau is a French commune in the département of Indre-et-Loire, in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. The commune is famous for its château. The town of Azay-le-Rideau is the chief town of the canton.
A little history
Azay-le-Rideau (Aziacum in Latin) has a very ancient origin dating back at least to the Roman period, as attested by the discovery in 1837 of the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa on the other side of the Indre, facing the current château. The village of Azay-le-Rideau was formed in the Middle Ages around a Benedictine priory of the abbaye de Cormery and the fortress of the lord Ridel d'Azay, a knight of Philippe Auguste, who built a defensive fortress to protect the road between Tours and Chinon. The knight Ridel d'Azay is mentioned for the first time as lord of the place in a charter of 1119.
