Asfeld [asfɛld] is a French commune situated in the département des Ardennes, in the Grand Est region. It is the chief town of the canton d'Asfeld. Asfeld incorporated the former commune of Juzancourt in 1971.
A little history
The village was formerly known as Écry (Ercherego). In 680, Ébroïn, maire du palais of Neustrie, having defeated the armies of Pépin de Herstal and Martin, dux de Champagne, at Laffaux, pursued his enemies and lured Martin to Asfeld where he had him put to death. The Vikings were defeated there in 883. In the Middle Ages, the lords of Escry built a fortified residence there.
