Ascain is a French commune situated in the département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bordered by Spain at the summit of la Rhune, the last Pyrenean peak, located six kilometres from the Atlantic coast, it is watered by the Nivelle, a coastal river that has its source in Navarre (Spain) and flows through the French Basque Country, notably the traditional Basque province of Labourd (capital, Bayonne), of which the commune forms part. Vestiges on the slopes of la Rhune date from the protohistoric period.
A little history
La Rhune contains a significant number of megalithic monuments, which bear witness to human activity during the Neolithic period. There are indeed cromlechs and dolmens dating from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, reflecting considerable funerary activity. The peat bog of Trois fontaines is for example dominated by the hill of Gorostia, where a necropolis showing nine stone circles was discovered at the lieu-dit Aïra-Harri. Likewise the two dolmens of Altsan can still be seen by walkers, as can the monolith of Athekalegun and that of Gastainbakar.
