The first mention of the village dates back to the 11th century, when the church was given to the abbaye de Savigny. It was burned down by the Tard-Venus in 1364. In the 14th century, Amplepuis was the seat of a châtellenie belonging to the seigneurs de Beaujeu. During the Wars of Religion, Amplepuis suffered damage.
