Ambert covers 60.5 km², lies between 514 and 1,365 m above sea level and had 6,517 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Ambert is a French commune situated in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is one of the four sub-prefectures of the département along with Issoire, Riom and Thiers. The second largest town in the parc naturel régional Livradois-Forez after Thiers, Ambert is known for its local gastronomy, notably the fourme d'Ambert, formerly produced in the jasseries of the Forez during the summer grazing season.
A little history
According to an unattributed thesis cited by Annette Lauras-Pourrat, the inhabitants of Ambert may be the descendants of "les Ambivareti", whom Caesar records as having broken away from the Arvernes and who, even after Alésia, remained unsubdued. She adds that this name may be associated with those who are defended on all sides, by the mountains. The town was a barony and the chief town of the Livradois. It belonged to the diocese of Saint-Flour, the intendance of Riom, the élection of Issoire, and was the seat of a maréchaussée. It enjoyed a charter of privileges dated July 1239, granted by Guillaume de Baffie, seigneur de Livradois.
