Ambarès-et-Lagrave (pronunciation [ɑ̃baʁɛs e laɡʁav], in Gascon 'Ambarés e la Grava') is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Gironde, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
A little history
In the 12th century, the town of Ambarès was part of a vast feudal estate comprising a large portion of the marshes of the Entre-deux-Mers. This estate later became the barony of Montferrand. The former parish of Ambarès fell almost entirely under the jurisdiction of the lords of Gua, who levied tithes there from the 15th century onwards. The district of Lagrave was attached to the commune of Ambarès in 1818, having been separated from it seven to eight centuries earlier.
