Airvault is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, located in the département des Deux-Sèvres, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. On 1 January 2019, the commune merged with Tessonnière under the regime of the commune nouvelle.
A little history
On 6 November 1939, following the invasion of Poland, the French general staff decided to establish, in the woods of Veluché, a base camp and a war depot for a division of Polish volunteers (the 2e division polonaise), comprising 16,000 fighters (the training camps were located at Gourgé and Thénezay). Under the agreement of 4 January 1940, a Polish army was able to be reconstituted in France. The Polish government in exile was based in Angers. This army, as the foreign army of an allied state, was placed under the authority of the commander-in-chief of the French army.
