Aire-sur-l'Adour is a commune in the south-west of France, situated in the département of Landes (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Dating back to the Roman era, and later a royal residence of the Visigoth kingdom, Aire is today a commune of approximately 6,200 inhabitants in a rural region, between Bordeaux and Pau. It is connected to the A65 motorway.
A little history
Aire and Dax are the only Landes towns from the pre-Roman era. Before the Roman era, an oppidum by the name of Atura existed on the site of Aire. From this name, borrowed from the river Adour, derive both the name of the town of Aire and that of the Tursan (pagus aturensis). It was occupied by the Aquitanian people of the Tarusates (Proto-Basques).
