Aiffres is a commune in the Centre-West of France, located in the département of Deux-Sèvres, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
A little history
Aiffres was, as early as the middle of the 10th century (948), a viguerie of the duchy of Aquitaine. Since 854, the region had been dominated by the house of Poitiers-Aquitaine, from which descended the double lineage of the counts of Poitiers and dukes of Aquitaine. The viguerie d'Aiffres (vicaria Afriacensis then vicaria Africa) formed the boundary between Poitou and Aunis-Saintonge. This boundary thus followed the natural frontier formed by the Guirande, separating the Gaulish territory of the Pictons, situated on the right bank of the river, from that of the Santons, situated on the other bank.
