Ydes is a French commune situated in the département of Cantal, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. At the heart of a mining basin, Ydes is known for its rich industrial past in coal extraction. Houille was extracted there from the Middle Ages onwards and on an industrial scale between 1842 and 1959, fully supporting the local economy.
A little history
Antiquity A milestone bearing the name of the emperor Postumus was found in the commune. It can be seen at the chapel of the château de Val, at Lanobre. Like several communes in northern Cantal, Ydes was the seat of a commandery of the order of the Temple, which at that time formed part of the Templar province of Auvergne and which was handed over at the beginning of the 14th century to the Hospitallers of the ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem within their langue d'Auvergne. Ydes then became a member of the commandery of the Pont-Vieux, commune of Tauves (1293), itself dependent on the Grand prieuré d'Auvergne.
