A little history
Until the 18th century, the forbidding forest, the very harsh climate and the impassable Lioran presented the Valagnon as an inhospitable land and a dead end. The first attested traces of habitation date back to the 6th century. At that time, the Valagnon was a major place of pilgrimage on the route to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Crowds of pilgrims came to receive the blessing, and sometimes the healing, of a hermit reclused in a cave on the heights of Fraisse-Haut, saint Calupan.
