Mauriac, the town
Mauriac covers 27.6 km², lies between 351 and 760 m above sea level and had 3,449 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mauriac is a French commune, the chief town of an arrondissement, situated in the département du Cantal in the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are known as the Mauriacois.
A little history
The oldest town in the Cantal, Mauriac first appeared in history as a village established before our era on the banks of a stream called the rieu Mauri, a tributary of the river l'Auze. A town grew up on the edge of a north-south Roman road. The town has remains dating from the 1st century and minted gold coins under the name of the Vicus de Mauriac in the 7th century, the period when a monastery was founded. In the 9th century, the Benedictine monastery Saint-Pierre is mentioned in a charter as being dependent on the royal abbey Saint-Pierre-le-Vif de Sens, on the occasion of its reconstruction.
