Riom-ès-Montagnes (pronounced [ʁjɔ̃ ɛs mɔ̃taɲ], Riòm de las Montanhas in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the département du Cantal, in the région d'Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are known as the Riomois and Riomoises.
A little history
On the ligne de Bort-les-Orgues à Neussargues, the commune benefited from a station brought into service on 11 May 1908 by the compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans. The SNCF closed the passenger service in 1990 and freight traffic in 1991, but the station regained activity in 1997 with the partial tourist operation of the line by the tourist train Gentiane express. The diatomite deposit of La Bade at Collandres (dating from the middle Miocene), in the vallée de la Véronne, supplied the CECA factory at Riom-ès-Montagnes. It was closed in 1994 owing to its exhaustion.
