Witry-lès-Reims (Vuytry in Champenois) is a French commune situated to the north-east of Reims, in the Marne département in the Grand Est region. The commune covers 16.5 km2 and has 4,950 inhabitants according to the most recent population census.
A little history
It was the seat of one of the many forts built around Reims after 1870 as part of the fortified belt of the Séré de Rivières system, constructed to defend Reims, which served as a second line of defence. The town suffered significant destruction during the First World War, including the bombing of homes and the church, as well as the blowing up by the occupying forces of the 1898 war memorial. One of the few buildings to have survived the conflict was the station, an "Est" type B building enlarged over time. It has since been decommissioned and its windows have been bricked up.
