Vitry-le-François covers 6.5 km², lies between 92 and 112 m above sea level and had 10,996 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Vitry-le-François (pronounced [vitʁiləfʁɑ̃swa] or [vitʁilfʁɑ̃swa]) is a commune in the east of France, situated in the département of the Marne, of which it is one of the sub-prefectures, in the Grand Est region. The town is relatively recent as it was created in 1545, at the behest of François Ier to rebuild the market town of Vitry-en-Perthois, which had been destroyed by war. The new settlement, built according to the plans of Girolamo Marini, then received its name and its motto from the king of France.
A little history
The founding of ancient Vitry is attributed to the Gauls. Around 50 BC, Roman troops took possession of Carkonne, on the Saulx, and built a fort there named Victrix, meaning "the victorious" in Latin. A Roman cemetery was moreover discovered in 1656, on the bank of the Marne, to the north of the town, by a vine-grower planting his vines.
