Sainte-Menehould (pronounced [sɛ̃tmənu] or [sɛ̃tmeneuld]) is a French commune, situated in the east of the département of the Marne in the Grand Est region. A former sous-préfecture of around 4,600 inhabitants, it is the capital of the region of the Argonne, whose eponymous forest lies largely within the territory of the commune. Made up of fairly populous areas and demographic voids, the vast territory of the commune is predominantly forested and lies in the valleys of the Aisne and the Biesme.
A little history
Adrien de Valois, taken up by numerous historians, advances the hypothesis that Sainte-Menehould would correspond to Auxuenna, a staging post on the Roman military road, at the point where it crosses the Aisne. Claude Buirette refutes this hypothesis in his Histoire de la ville de Sainte-Ménehould et de ses environs and demonstrates from various writings that Auxuenna corresponds to the present-day Vienne-la-Ville, to the north of Sainte-Menehould. However, the road would cross or pass not far from the current territory of the commune, as part of the route would lie "dans la contrée de bois appelée la Grange-aux-Bois".
