Aÿ-Champagne has been, since 1 January 2016, a new French commune situated in the département of la Marne, in the Grand Est region. It was formed from the merger of the three communes of Aÿ, Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Aÿ-Champagne is one of the four French communes containing a y with a diaeresis in their name (along with Faÿ-lès-Nemours, Moÿ-de-l'Aisne and L'Haÿ-les-Roses).
A little history
In order to safeguard the finances of their communes in a context of falling state grants, the mayors of the three communes of Aÿ, Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ proposed to their municipal councils that they merge their local authorities, enabling the creation of a new entity, the commune nouvelle of Aÿ-Champagne which brings them together. The creation of the new commune took effect on 1 January 2016, resulting in the transformation of the three former communes into "communes déléguées", the creation of which was confirmed by the order of 9 November 2015. Its chef-lieu is set at the chef-lieu of the former commune of Aÿ.
