Bétheny is a French commune situated in the département of Marne, in the Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are called the Béthenyats. At the Bétheny aerodrome (future base aérienne 112 Reims-Champagne) the first international air show took place in August 1909, bringing together the greatest aviators of the era, such as Roger Sommer, Henri Farman and Louis Blériot.
A little history
In 1870, part of the commune was detached to form the new commune of La Neuvillette, since annexed to Reims. On 21 September 1901, manoeuvres took place in the presence of Nicolas II and the President of the Republic Émile Loubet, as part of the Franco-Russian alliance, involving the participation of 120,000 soldiers under the command of général Brugère. From 22 to 29 August 1909, the « Grande Semaine d'aviation de la Champagne » was held in Bétheny, the first international aviation meeting in the history of aviation, attended by one million spectators.
