Wissous, the town
Wissous covers 9.1 km², lies between 48 and 99 m above sea level and had 7,151 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Wissoussienne.
Wissous (pronounced [visu]) is a French commune situated approximately fourteen kilometres south of Paris in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Thanks to the presence of springs and watercourses, human settlement in the area dates back to the end of Prehistory and the beginning of Antiquity. A rural commune, Wissous developed notably in the agricultural domain.
A little history
As no river or ancient road passes through the territory of the commune, it is the presence of springs that accounts notably for human settlement in the area at the end of Prehistory and the beginning of Antiquity. Excavations have revealed in particular, to the north-east of Wissous, traces of dwellings dating from the period of the final Bronze Age and the first Iron Age, as well as from the Gaulish and Gallo-Roman periods. Excavations carried out from 2009 to 2011 near the airport runways (rue du Berger) brought to light a Gaulish farm, Parisii, of more than two hectares, dating from the 2nd century BC.
