Située dans la haute vallée de la Loue à 7 kilomètres d'Ornans, elle comptait 669 habitants nommés Vuillafanais et Vuillafanaises en 2023. Le village, bénéficiant du label Cité de Caractère de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, possède quatre édifices protégés au titre des monuments historiques, dont l'église de l'Assomption, la maison dite de Balthazar Gérard, la maison dite La Forteresse, et l'immeuble du 10 place Saint-Vernier.
