A little history
The inhabitants of Métabief were freed in August 1393 by Jean de Chalon. From the 15th century onwards, the development of the commune flourished thanks to the mining of iron ore known as « limonite de Métabief », whose cast iron was extracted in the blast furnaces of Rochejean and Pontarlier, and also thanks to the crafts linked to the manufacture of agricultural tools and forest exploitation. From the mid-19th century, this industry suffered from competition from Belgian and Scottish cast iron and from the reduction in the quantities of wood used to fuel the forges.
