Maîche (pronounced [mɛʃ]) is a French commune situated in the département du Doubs, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the chief town of the canton de Maîche and of the communauté de communes du pays de Maîche. Its population stood at 4,233 inhabitants in 2023, known as Maîchois and Maîchoises.
A little history
In the medieval period, Maîche developed in the vicinity of its castle (known as Châtillon sur Maîche, also Chaitel or Chastel, on account of its elevated position, as opposed to Châtillon-sous-Maîche), with the construction of a church in the early twelfth century among other developments, and the first fairs were held there from 1386. Maîche was at that time the head of a lordship covering an area stretching from Bretonvillers to Montandon.
