Vouillé is a French commune situated in the département of Vienne in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its name is associated with the battle that took place in 507, a few decades after the end of the Western Roman Empire (476), between the army of the Frankish king Clovis and that of the Visigoth king Alaric II, a battle that enabled Clovis to drive the Visigoths out of Gaul. Since 2017, Vouillé has been part of the communauté de communes du Haut-Poitou, whose headquarters are located in Neuville-de-Poitou, 9 km to the north.
A little history
Within the Western Roman Empire, the Visigoths, who sacked Rome in 410, subsequently settled in the region of Narbonne and Toulouse. In 418, under pressure from the Roman troops of the general Flavius Constance, they concluded a federation agreement with the Roman authorities of Ravenne, establishing the royaume de Toulouse, which took control of Aquitaine from the Garonne to the Loire. After the end of the Western Empire (476), the Visigoth kings (Alaric II from 484 onwards) were confronted with the advance of the Salian Franks (also former federates) under king Clovis, who seized the royaume de Soissons in 486, likewise reaching the Loire.
