Vonnas (pronounced [vɔna]) is a French commune situated in the département of l'Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, to the south of the Bresse savoyarde and not far from the Dombes. It belongs to the canton of which it is the centralising office. Its inhabitants are called the Vonnassiens and the Vonnassiennes.
A little history
Various objects attest to the presence of humans from prehistoric times. For instance, eight polished stone axes were found in the village and in the hamlets of Chassin, Lamboyat, Namary and Bézemême. In addition, tiles at les Plaines and a silver medal of Tiberius at les Jacques were discovered. Before the arrival of the Romans in the territory, the Celtic people of the Ambarres, whose name means "living on both (amb) sides of the Saône (Arar, the Saône)", occupied the Bresse region and its vast forests.
