Gex (pronounced [ʒɛks]) is a French commune, sub-prefecture of the département de l'Ain, situated in the north-east of the latter, at the tip of the région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is the capital of the natural and historical region of the pays de Gex. It forms part of the Grand Genève.
A little history
As early as 1800 BC, the site of Gex was inhabited. Around 220 BC, Gex and its surroundings were occupied by a horde of courageous warriors, the Gésates (so called because they were armed with a gaesium, a type of iron lance).
