Bourg-en-Bresse (pronounced [buʁ.k‿ɑ̃.bʁɛs]) is a French commune, prefecture of the département de l'Ain in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and the historic capital of the natural region of la Bresse. A little history
Traces show that the territory was occupied during the Gaulish period, though little information has come down to us from that era. Discoveries [which ones?] suggest that Brou was the first area of the town to be settled. Fragments of inscriptions, coins and ancient debris collected at various times have been uncovered in Bourg and have made it possible to identify two areas of habitation, a village at Brou centred on a fanum as well as a small fort converted into a feudal castle located on the present-day place des Lices. Nevertheless, the name Bourg does not appear until the 11th century, and in the 11th century this name still applied only to a village with no rank in the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
