A little history
Voltaire chose Ferney in 1759 for its proximity to the border, useful in the event of difficulties with the royal administration, and to Geneva, the city of his rival Jean-Jacques Rousseau. On his arrival, the hamlet had barely one hundred and fifty inhabitants. On the statue of Voltaire, installed in the town centre, he is described as the Bienfaiteur de Ferney. Indeed, he enabled the demographic as well as economic growth of Ferney which, within a few years, went from a village structure to a genuine small town.
