Vizille covers 10.5 km², lies between 268 and 1,016 m above sea level and had 7,292 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Vizille (pronounced [vi.zil]) is a French commune situated, geographically in the Romanche valley, and administratively in the département of Isère and in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Formerly attached to the province of Dauphiné and the birthplace of the French Revolution, Vizille is situated on the route Napoléon which links Golfe-Juan to Grenoble. The town is home in particular to the musée de la Révolution française, housed in the château de François de Bonne (1543-1626), duc de Lesdiguières, last connétable de France, governor of Dauphiné and former lord of the area.
A little history
At the time of the submission of the Allobroges to the Romans, Vizille was a fortified town known as Oppidum Antiquum. After the Roman conquest, a road passed through it, coming from Suze via the col du Lautaret and the Romanche valley and heading towards Cularo, present-day Grenoble. On several occasions the Romans were forced to abandon this route, driven back by Allobroges warriors. It would subsequently become Castra Vigiliae, a Roman military station.
