Viviers, the town
Viviers covers 34.2 km², lies between 55 and 400 m above sea level and had 3,633 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Viviers, or Viviers-sur-Rhône, is a French commune situated in the département of Ardèche in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Viviers is the former capital of the province of Vivarais, Vivariensis Pagus, to which it gave its name and which belonged to the royal province of Languedoc until 1789. The city remains the seat of its own bishopric, also known as the diocèse du Vivarais, made up of twenty-four parishes since 1 October 2003.
A little history
Excavations carried out by Yves Esquieu led to the discovery of the remains of a square and column bases belonging to a Roman villa. The Romans had established at Viviers the supply centre (vivarium) for the city of Alba, accessible via the pont romain de Viviers on the voie d'Antonin. Between the 3rd and 5th centuries the bishops left Alba and settled in Viviers, which became the new capital of the Helvie and then of the Vivarais, in order to protect themselves from the incursions of barbarian invaders. The Burgondes conquered the Vivarais around 476 and its capital around 507.
