Bourg-Saint-Andéol is a French commune, situated in the département of Ardèche in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The town is situated on the right bank of the Rhône opposite Pierrelatte (Drôme). The coat of arms of the town, which was found carved on a stone from the old fortifications, relates to the legend of saint Andéol.
A little history
At the beginning of the Wars of Religion, the Huguenots laid siege to the town. They demanded that 2,000 écus be raised within 24 hours, failing which the town would be razed. The inhabitants managed to collect this sum and Bourg-Saint-Andéol was spared. The town suffered from the American bombardment of 15 August 1944, which destroyed a third of the old town and damaged some of its finest monuments, such as the hôtel Nicolaÿ (15th century), of which only an octagonal tower remains.
