Annonay is a French commune situated in the département of Ardèche, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The historic capital of the Haut-Vivarais, Annonay is, with more than 17,000 inhabitants, the most populous commune in Ardèche. Its inhabitants are known as the Annonéens.
A little history
The first written record mentioning Annonay is thought to date from 403. A chronicle from the archives of Vienne would describe the town as a hamlet built by poor parchment workers who had strayed into the mountains of the Haut-Vivarais. A manuscript now lost, the Histoire d'Annonay by Père Barthélemy Popon (fl. 1743, curé d'Annonay, chanoine de Saint-Ruf), would specify that Evance, bishop of Vienne, had a church dedicated to Sainte Marie or Notre-Dame built on the site of the place de la Liberté in 584. A charter of 790 (Les statuts de l'Église de Vienne), confirmed in 805 and taken from the cartulary of the Église de Vienne, cites Annonay as the seat of a rural archpriesthood.
