Saint-Péray is a French commune situated in the département of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Formerly situated in the royal province of Vivarais and a member of the communauté de communes Rhône-Crussol since 2014, this small town is situated 5 km from Valence, the chef-lieu of Drôme in the Rhône valley, and its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Pérollais.
A little history
The current village appeared around the 15th century, when the inhabitants left the fortifications of the château de Crussol to come and live in the valley of the Mialan. This new village took the name of Saint-Pierre d'Ay which, in the local patois, gave Saint-Péray. During the French Revolution of 1789, Saint-Péray temporarily changed its name to become Péray Vin Blanc (owing to the unquestionable reputation of the white wine of Saint-Péray at that time). In 2018, the commune of Saint-Péray had around 7,600 inhabitants.
