Vireux-Molhain is a French commune situated on the left bank of the Meuse, in the département des Ardennes in the Grand Est region. The town is of particular tourist interest owing to the presence of sites of great cultural and historical value, but also to the Meuse valley, the forêt d'Ardenne and the industrial past of the region. It forms part of the parc naturel régional des Ardennes.
A little history
Furnaces, slag heaps (residues of iron ore smelted on site), and remains bearing witness to a long-standing activity (a cellar, dwellings) attest to the presence of an iron-working centre in the 1st century on the banks of the Meuse, shortly before its confluence with the Viroin. It was probably to protect this economic activity and to keep watch over river traffic that the fortification of the mont Vireux began during the 3rd century. The first incursions of Germanic peoples threatened the Roman Empire, prompting the emperor Postume, and the Empereurs des Gaules who succeeded him, to reinforce the frontiers.
