Viré, the town
Viré covers 11.3 km², lies between 177 and 441 m above sea level and had 1,225 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Viré is a French commune situated in Haut-Mâconnais in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The commune is also known locally as Viré-en-Mâconnais. It now forms part of the canton of Hurigny, having previously belonged to the canton of Lugny from 1790 to 2015.
A little history
At the end of July 1789, an episode of the Grande Peur took place in Mâconnais. Among other brigands arrested, the Viré native Antoine Baguet (52 years old), a winegrower, was hanged in Mâcon. In 1790, upon the creation of the cantons, the commune of Viré was attached to the canton of Lugny, which was then made up of twelve communes. On 4 March 1928, the Viré wine cooperative was founded, with Jean-Baptiste Moreau as its president.
