A little history
Autun has preserved numerous ancient and medieval traces. The town was one of the Christian capitals of the Roman world. It was during the reign of the Roman emperor Auguste (-27/14) that the city of Autun was founded. Its ancient name, Augustodunum, means the fortress of Auguste. Auguste wished to create a great city in Gaul that would demonstrate the power of Rome.
