Montceau-les-Mines covers 16.6 km², lies between 274 and 326 m above sea level and had 17,064 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Montceau-les-Mines is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is a former mining town in the Saône-et-Loire coalfield, a basin that was exploited as early as the Middle Ages, but on an industrial scale from the 19th century until 2000, enabling the growth of the steel and mechanical industries in the region. It is the 13th largest commune in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté by population.
A little history
In 1475, a hamlet had around 25 inhabitants, but one must wait until 1645 to find any trace of the current name. As the centuries passed, the neighbouring communes grew. Originally, an inn and a few farms formed a hamlet, one of which was called le Montceau, and so the name of the future commune was found. The construction of the canal du Centre between 1783 and 1791, followed by the establishment of the Compagnie des mines de houille de Blanzy in 1833, are the two principal events that brought about the creation of a town.
