Louhans-Châteaurenaud, and formerly Louhans until 31 December 2025, is a French commune situated geographically in the plain of Bresse, and administratively in the département of Saône-et-Loire, of which it is one of the chefs lieux d'arrondissement, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This "ville à la campagne" of rather modest size at regional level is the historic centre of a small French tourist area, known locally as "la Bresse louhannaise", the principal component of the Bresse bourguignonne, named thus in opposition to the Bresse savoyarde or Bresse de l'Ain, situated further south in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
A little history
Man may have been present very early in this part of the Bresse known as the louhanaise, as human presence has left traces in the neighbouring Mâconnais, near Solutré. The Revermont contains many caves, as does the very nearby pays tournugeois, where man could shelter and protect himself from the predators of the time. At first, the earliest men were hunters and then they also became herdsmen, raising domesticated animals in enclosures. The Bronze Age and, later, the Iron Age brought enormous agricultural progress to these inhabitants.
