Chalon-sur-Saône (prononcé) is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. With 45,102 inhabitants at the last census of 2023, Chalon-sur-Saône is ranked the 147th town in France (out of 35,357 communes). It is the most populous town in Saône-et-Loire (ahead of Mâcon, the chef-lieu), the 4th town in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (after Dijon, Besançon and Belfort, and ahead of Auxerre and Nevers) and the 2nd town in Bourgogne. It is the most densely populated town in Saône-et-Loire, with nearly 3,000 inhabitants per km².
A little history
Despite a very great number of archaeological remains found in the bed of the Saône (late Bronze Age and La Tène (second Iron Age)), little trace is known before the classical ancient period. A Gaulish site is attested a few kilometres to the south of the present town, on the right bank of the Saône, in the commune of Lux. The city is mentioned for the first time in the Guerre des Gaules by Jules César (VII, 42 and 90) under the name of Cavillonum. Throughout its history, it has benefited from its important communication routes.
