Tournus covers 14.6 km², lies between 168 and 323 m above sea level and had 5,701 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Tournus (prononcé) is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the principal commune of the communauté de communes du Mâconnais-Tournugeois. It has numerous historic monuments, notably the abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus and the Hôtel-Dieu.
A little history
Situated in the pays des Eduens, the area of Tournus and Basse-Bourgogne lay in Celtic Gaul. At the beginning of 197, Septime Sévère, having arrived in Gaul via the Jura, pushed back his rival Clodius Albinus, who was defeated shortly afterwards at the battle of Lyon (February 197). A former Roman garrison built on the banks of the Saône, the Romans used it as a storehouse for their fodder and grain, necessary for supplying the legions. The city was subsequently occupied by the Burgondes during the first half of the 5th century.
