Villerest [vilʁɛ] is a French commune situated in the département of Loire in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
A little history
The Vigne Brun site has yielded Gravettian remains. Perched on high ground, the medieval town of Villarys has its ramparts and its Porte de Bise, a listed site, along with its jettied and half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. On 9 January 1965, Villerêt took the name of Villerest. Following the vote on the law of 16 July 1971, known as the loi Marcellin, which established regrouping plans and sought to promote the merging of communes, the municipal council of Villerest was the only one in the Roanne conurbation to agree to a regrouping with Roanne and to become an associated commune.
